VSP Mobile Eyes Program Q3 Outreach Impact Remains Strong

Over 3,400 low-income, uninsured served nationwide by 105 VSP Doctors
Rancho Cordova, Calif., October 30, 2009 – In the third quarter of 2009, the VSP® Mobile Eyes® program, in partnership with 105 VSP network doctors, provided outreach to over 3,400 low-income, uninsured and underinsured individuals and families nationwide, bringing the total number for the year to over 9,500.
VSP’s two mobile clinics traveled to 34 locations, including providing eye exams to infants for two weeks in Louisiana with InfantSEE®, a program created by Optometry’s Charity™ – the AOA Foundation, and a three day event in South Carolina with the support of Congressman James Clyburn (D-SC). Over 350 VSP eye doctors have volunteered their time to work onboard the mobile eyecare clinics since inception of the program.
“Through the VSP Mobile Eyes program, we have had the opportunity to impact close to 10,000 pairs of eyes so far this year that would have otherwise gone unexamined,” said Connie Vavricek, VSP Mobile Clinics Manager. “VSP remains strongly committed to increasing access to quality eyecare for all U.S. citizens, including the uninsured and underinsured.”
The VSP Mobile Eyes program now provides patients new, donated frames from Marchon® Eyewear.
The VSP Mobile Eyes program began as an extension of relief efforts following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. The program, which allows VSP to respond to disasters immediately, includes two mobile eyecare clinics and 10 sets of portable ophthalmic equipment. Both clinics feature two state of the art comprehensive eye exam rooms and a full dispensary to provide exams and materials to people in need.
