VSP Mobile Eyes Program Q1 Outreach Impact Felt from Calif. to Fla.

Mobile clinics now using social media to communicate efforts
Rancho Cordova, Calif., April 17, 2009 – In the first quarter of 2009, the VSP® Mobile Eyes® program, in partnership with our network doctors, provided outreach to close to 2000 low-income, uninsured and underinsured individuals and families from California to Florida.
The mobile clinics traveled to 26 locations, including providing support at the International Special Olympics in Idaho and the PGA Transitions Championship at Innisbrook Golf Club in Florida. Close to 40 VSP eye doctors volunteered their time to work onboard the mobile eyecare clinics.
“This first quarter has shown the diversity of the VSP Mobile Eyes program,” said Connie Vavricek, VSP Mobile Clinics Manager. “VSP is committed to partnering with a variety of community groups to provide outreach services.”
The VSP Mobile Eyes program also started using social media as a way to interact with the community through Twitter. This communication includes providing updates on events the clinics are participating in as well as communicating with those affected in disaster regions, such as the flooding in North Dakota and tornadoes in Mississippi. To follow the activities of the mobile clinics on Twitter, go to www.twitter.com/SeeZar and www.twitter.com/SeeLia.
The VSP Mobile Eyes program began as an extension of relief efforts following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. The program, which allows VSP to respond to disasters immediately, includes two mobile eyecare clinics and 10 sets of portable ophthalmic equipment. Both clinics feature two state of the art comprehensive eye exam rooms and a full dispensary to provide exams and materials to people in need.
