VSP Global to participate in the largest free healthcare event in the U.S.
October 22, 2011
Rancho Cordova, Calif., October 14, 2011 – VSP GlobalSM announced its participation as the primary vision sponsor in the largest free healthcare event held to date in the U.S. The clinic, organized by CareNow in collaboration with Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas and his staff, takes place on Oct. 20-23 at the Los Angeles Sports Arena and offers comprehensive medical, dental, and vision care to individuals and families who are without access.
VSP Global has committed in-kind resources from each of its four lines of business, valued at close to $1 million, including staffing, educational materials, lanes of portable ophthalmic equipment, a mobile eye clinic, frames and lenses. Working in partnership with volunteer doctors and schools of optometry faculty and students, the vision area is estimated to provide free eye exams and eyewear to more than 2,000 patients over the four day event.
“VSP Global has a long standing commitment to giving back to the community and educating consumers about the critical role eye health plays in a person’s overall health,” said Rob Lynch, CEO of VSP Global. “Leveraging the strength of our organization along with the doctors, faculty and students who are volunteering their time, provides us with the opportunity to continue elevating the role of optometry in the healthcare continuum.”
In addition to VSP, other vision supporters participating include Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH) and Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO). “We are excited to have our students work with VSP on an outreach event of this magnitude,” stated John Nishimoto, O.D., M.B.A., F.A.A.O., Professor, SCCO. “To show the students first hand the type of commitment and support they can count on from industry leaders to help them give back to those less fortunate is an eye opening experience.”
CareNow will transform the Sports Arena into a giant clinic where hundreds of doctors, dentists, optometrists, nurses and general volunteers will be onsite to service those in need. Services will include physical exams, mammography, PAP smears, diabetes screenings, dental cleanings, extractions, fillings, root canals, eye exams and prescription eye glasses.
