Free Health Programs Expand to Reduce Leading Causes of Blindness in Adults
VSP Eye on Wellness partners with ZeaVision to increase access to care for the ten million people most at risk.
Rancho Cordova, Calif. – Nearly ten million people in the United States suffer from diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), two of the leading causes of blindness in adults. Early detection and proper care are critical to minimize or slow the progression of the diseases’ impact on their vision. But for many, lack of awareness coupled with lack of access to care make the odds of losing one of their most valued senses[i] extremely high.
To continue addressing this immense need, VSP® Vision Care added ZeaVision® as a VSP Eye on Wellness campaign partner to increase the number of free Eye on Diabetes and Eye on AMD continuing education seminars for optometrists, offering the latest research, treatment and nutritional strategies. The campaign will also continue to include free health and eye care services for patients in need.
“VSP’s mission is to help people see,” said Jim McGrann, president of VSP Vision Care. “By expanding the VSP Eye on Wellness program, we can increase patient awareness and access to care while providing doctors with the most up-to-date information to provide the highest quality of care for those who have or are at risk for diabetes and AMD.”
VSP Eye on Wellness, now in its fourth year, will launch in San Francisco on July 20, 2014, with the first of eight free continuing education seminars approved by the Council on Optometric Practitioner Education (COPE). Four hours of continuing education on AMD or diabetes will be offered to all licensed optometrists in Arizona, California, Georgia, Illinois, New York, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas.
Uninsured and underinsured residents with low income in Columbus, Ohio; Phoenix, Arizona; Charleston, South Carolina; and, Houston, Texas will receive free health services from VSP Mobile Eyes®, including comprehensive eye exams and health risks assessments for AMD using equipment including QuantifEye® and EyePromise® ocular nutrition brands provided by ZeaVision.
"ZeaVision is very pleased to partner with VSP in this important initiative,” said Chris Barber, President of ZeaVision. “ZeaVision’s mission is to preserve and enhance vision through ocular nutrition and technology, and we’re excited to expand our reach and impact in these communities through this endeavor.”
VSP doctors can volunteer their time and expertise to provide eye exams on-board on one of three VSP Mobile Eyes clinics outfitted with state-of-the-art eye exam rooms, eyewear dispensaries with popular frame brands and finishing labs for glasses.
