Tyreke Evans & VSP® Vision Care Provide Eye Exams and Glasses to Community of Chester, PA
Rancho Cordova, CA, September 20, 2011 – NBA Star and Chester native Tyreke Evans returned to Chester for the second year in a row with VSP Vision Care to provide no-cost comprehensive eye exams and glasses to eligible students at three local schools. Chester Mayor Wendell Butler, Jr. was in attendance and presented Tyreke with a proclamation declaring the week “Tyreke Evans Eye on Vision Week”.
“Tyreke is from humble beginnings and is a role model that allows us to show the world what Chester is about,” said Mayor Butler. “We’re proud of this city, and were proud of Tyreke.”
“Vision is important and many people can’t afford to get the eyecare they need,” said Tyreke Evans. “Bringing the VSP mobile clinic back to my hometown is a great way to give back to my community.”
Evans is committed to giving back to the community he grew up in and partnered with VSP to provide eyecare for those in need. VSP doctors and students from the Eye Institute School of Optometry volunteered their time to provide the eye exams for the community in the VSP mobile eyecare clinic. They provided care at Chester High School, Science & Discovery Allied Health High School, and Tyreke’s alma mater New Beginnings Academy. More than 100 eye exams were given during the three-day event, and 100 gift certificates were distributed that would allow recipients to get care at a local VSP doctor’s office.
“It was fantastic to work with VSP to provide eyecare for those in need in this community,” said VSP provider Dr. Dennis Delp. “I had the opportunity to treat children who had severe vision issues and had never seen a doctor before. Working on outreach events like this with VSP is always a pleasure and very rewarding.”
As children return back to school, healthy vision is essential to help them achieve their academic potential. It has been estimated that as much as 80 percent of what a child learns is through his or her eyes and more than 60 percent of children with learning problems have undiagnosed vision problems.
Tyreke Evans plays guard for the Sacramento Kings and was Rookie of the Year during the 2009-2010 season. He was the fourth rookie ever to average 20 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds per game. The only other players to accomplish this feat are Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan and Lebron James.
