VSP Vision Care, East Los Angeles Boys & Girls Club, East Los Angeles Lions Club, and local optometrists partner to provide eye exams and eyecare
East Los Angeles, CA, January 14, 2009 – VSP® Vision Care, in partnership with two local optometrists, the East Los Angeles Boys & Girls Club, and the East Los Angeles Lions Club provided comprehensive eye examinations for local underserved children on January 10, 2009.
Local VSP doctors Juan Tienda and Candice Galvan provided exams in two examination rooms available in the 45’ mobile clinic provided by VSP. The clinic was located at the East LA Boys & Girls Club, where the East LA Lions Club provided support with pre-screenings.
"The East LA Boys & Girls Club is close to my heart," shared Dr. Juan Tienda. "I was a member of the Club as a child and it made a true impact on my life. I remember receiving a basketball from the Club one Christmas, and it brightened my holidays. To this day, I remember that gift and the difference it made to me. Providing eye exams to neighborhood kids is a great way for me to give back to the community and to the organization that helped shape my future." In addition to using the services of the club during his youth, Dr. Tienda also served several terms on East Los Angeles Boys & Girls Club Board of Directors.
The need for eyecare in the Los Angeles area is great. According to the US Census Bureau, Los Angeles County has the highest Hispanic population of any county in the US, yet more than 32 percent of Hispanics are uninsured. For kids, the impact of being uninsured can be greater, as it’s estimated that up to 80 percent of what we learn is through our eyes.
In the past year, the VSP Mobile Eyes program traveled to 62 locations nationwide providing charitable eyecare services to more than 6,500 low-income, uninsured and underinsured individuals and families. The program, which allows VSP to respond to disasters immediately, includes two mobile eyecare clinics and 10 sets of portable ophthalmic equipment. Both clinics feature two state of the art comprehensive eye exam rooms and a full dispensary to provide exams and materials to people in need.
