DIRECTV joins VSP in efforts to expand program
Rancho Cordova, Calif., August 26, 2010 – Today, VSP® Vision Care’s charitable program, Eyes of Hope®, in partnership with VSP network doctors, clients and members, announced it has collected and distributed over 50,000 glasses to those in need around the globe since the program’s inception in December 2008.
The program receives donations from across the United States through a growing number of avenues that include small and large businesses, eyecare practices, schools, healthcare facilities and individuals. DIRECTV recently rolled out the program nationally to provide their employees with an additional opportunity to participate in charity outreach.
“The VSP Eyes of Hope program has created a successful no-cost opportunity for our company to easily engage in,” said Paul Rhilinger, Sr. Manager, Health & Wellness, DIRECTV. “The program not only benefits thousands of people in need of glasses, but also provides our employees with a way to give back that has lasting and tremendous value.”
The Eyes of Hope Program increases awareness about the importance of eye health and provides communities with the opportunity to support a charitable cause by donating used glasses. Once the used glasses are received by VSP, they are refurbished, cleaned and labeled to benefit those in developing countries through VSP doctors and world missions. The majority of VSP doctors participate in self-funded missions to emerging countries where they have identified a need, while others work through larger organizations such as Lion’s International and the Voice of Optometry in Developing Nations (VOSH) for mission opportunities.
“VSP is committed to humanitarian causes,” said Kate Renwick-Espinosa, Chief Marketing Officer, VSP GlobalSM. “This program continues to grow because of the ease of the program combined with the desire of our clients, members and doctors to give back to those in need.”
Following the recent earthquake in Haiti, VSP put a matching fundraising effort in place with employees resulting in close to $20,000 donated to the American Red Cross. In addition to the monetary donation, VSP also donated over 1,000 pairs of eyeglasses to an optometric mission spearheaded by VSP doctors in Haiti.
