Inspiration Is All Around Us

November 18, 2016

Thanksgiving is a time to acknowledge our blessings. It is a time to say thanks for all of the opportunities we have been given and the people in our lives. Here are a few of the things I am grateful this year.

VSP Global has over 6,000 employees and I am thankful for each and every one of them. One who I am especially grateful for is Renee Emmerson. Renee unexpectedly lost her sight due to severe basal laminar drusen a few years ago, and as result, has struggled since with everyday tasks like reading, cooking, even leaving her house. I met Renee at the start of her vision loss journey and have seen how its progress affected her life. Our relationship has deepened my understanding of vision loss, and inspired me to better serve our members impacted by it. Renee is currently working on a few different projects for VSP to help us better serve blind and low-vision communities. I am grateful that Renee is using her experience with vision loss to help us evolve as a company.

Opportunities to give back

I am also grateful to work for a mission driven company focused on helping people see worldwide. Our Vision Care line of business operates as a not-for-profit, meaning that earnings are used to bring vision to people in need around the world. Every year, our mobile eye care clinics travel around the country to help people and places most in need. This year, we made a commitment to help a million people in need by 2020 by partnering with the U.S. Conference of Mayors. Over the last five months, we visited 10 cities across the U.S. with our mobile clinics, providing no-cost eye exams and glasses for adults and children in need. It is events like this that inspire me to do the best work that I can so we can continue fulfilling our mission of helping people see.

The year ahead

Lastly, I am thankful for the year ahead and the possibilities that it brings. I will be a grandfather in March, which is an experience that my wife Taryn and I are eagerly awaiting. Whatever awaits you in the year ahead, I wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving.
