New Opportunities for Free Continuing Education

By Jeffry Gerson, OD, FAAO April 01, 2015

For the fifth year, VSP Vision Care is sponsoring Eye on Wellness continuing education (CE) seminars for optometrists with A. Paul Chous, MA, OD, FAAO, and I as keynote speakers.

What's really exciting is that VSP has expanded the number of seminars to 10 and will be offering Eye on Nutrition in addition to Eye on Diabetes and Eye on Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD). All of the seminars will offer four hours of COPE-approved CE for free to all licensed optometrists.

As practicing optometrists who are regularly seeing patients, Dr. Chous and I have a unique approach to the topics. We want every doctor who attends to walk away with the latest research, actionable data, and best practices that they can immediately apply with their own patients. We continually update the presentations as new research becomes available and we use examples from our own practices to make it easy for other optometrists to implement what they learn.

The first seminars launched in California in February, but there are still eight seminars remaining:

Eye on AMD will be offered in Indiana, Oregon, and Pennsylvania. You'll walk away with an understanding of why AMD happens, how it affects visual function, and strategies for diagnosis and prevention. You'll also get insight into enhanced diagnostic strategies, nutritional intervention for AMD, and case studies to help you develop protocols for maximizing patient care.

Eye on Diabetes will be offered in Kansas and Massachusetts. You'll get a unique look at diabetes and the eye diseases associated with it, review profiles of patients with/at risk of diabetes and your role in their care. You'll also learn about the latest trends in diabetes care and how that affects the care you provide, plus review some common and not-so-common disasters pertaining to the care of patients with diabetes and your role in preventing these dangerous situations.

Eye on Nutrition will be offered in Colorado, Texas, and Washington, DC. You'll learn how nutrition affects ocular health—full course descriptions are coming soon.
